Apple recently made clear its intention to bring AirPlay mirroring to the Mac with the launch of Mountain Lion. But third party apps like Airparrot, brought the same functionality to Snow Leopard. The same developers have now released Reflection app which lets users of iPad 2 and iPhone 4S have their iDevices display on Mac’s display over Airplay.
The App is not complete but provides good functionality for a daily use. Once the app is installed users can select Mac from Airplay on iPad 2/iPhone 4S and Voila! the iDevice screen appears on the Mac in real-time. The display is encased in an iPhone/iPad frame and runs around 30 fps with quite a high-res of 1929-by-1080. Reflection supports Full Mirroring which means it mirrors both audio and video signals complete with orientation lock. The Device can be set in portrait or landscape though.
The Youtube videos and other apps like Safari provided an overall decent experience. There was minor lag, but that was bearable considering the overall funtionality. The only situation when the apps crashed in our tests were while playing graphic intensive games like Infinity Blade 2 and Batman Arkham City. Other games like Cut the Rope and Angry Birds Rio ran smooth as silk.
The app doesnt give much options presently except for choosing the resolution for your device and full screen mode. But the full screen mode just makes the app as a Full screen app with grey background but doesn’t fill the entire screen with iPad’s display. That would have been awesome as it would have really given the much needed real estate. The App’s website also boasts of screen recording but we did not find it in the current version. May be, it will be added in the future updates.
you can grab a single-user license of Reflection for $14.99 or 5 licenses for $39.99 here. There is also a free limited-time trial available through the website before you make the purchase. Have you tried yet it? Let’s know what do you think about it in the comment section.
